The Trouble with Big Brains

Rander had his 9-month appointment a few weeks ago. He was 27 inches tall and weighed 17 pounds 4 ounces, which puts him in the 4th percentile for height and the 10th for weight. What can I say? I make gigantic babies!

But seriously, this kid seems so huge and almost fat to us (I swear, he's so close to almost kind of barely having leg rolls. It's awesome) and we love it. But apparently he just realized, "Hey, my mom hasn't had Stress Induced Diarrhea for months. I should do something about that!" Tiny almost fat baby jerk.

Apparently he takes after his daddy in the head department: 4th percentile for height. 10th percentile for weight. One jillionth percentile for head size. If the only problem with this were that he didn't fit into the cute new sun hat I got him for our vacation, that would be tragic enough.

Unfortunately, it gets worse. Little man's head is growing so fast that he has to have an MRI to check for hydrocephalus. Cole was at the appointment and reminded the pediatrician that our kids have giant noggins. Which Cole is convinced is because they have giant brains. Which he is also convinced they get from him. I'm saying it could just be a whole lotta skull. But the doc is still concerned and wants to check it.

Tukk had this same issue, so we did a head ultrasound to make sure everything was fine. No biggie. Rander realizes he's caused us only a fraction of the stress his big bro did and he wants to level the playing field just a bit, so he made sure his soft spot was too small for a head ultrasound to be effective. Tiny almost fat baby jerk.

The worst part? HE HAS TO BE SEDATED.

Gah. You know how sedating the children gives me instant SID. I have flashbacks to Tukk's first sedation, which almost killed him. Yes, he was a super tiny very sicky unstable NICU baby at the time, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that he'd have a hard time coming back out of sedation. And yes, he'd already almost died like a baker's dozen times by then, so what was one more? And yes, he's been completely fine every other time he's been sedated since then so I shouldn't be so freaked out.

Does all that matter when you're the mother? No. No it does not.

So tomorrow is the big MRI day. I already have a lovely ball of acid eating a hole in the lining of my stomach. I just like to plan ahead, you know?

If you feel like saying an extra prayer for this tiny almost fat baby jerk, that would be awesome.

I'm sure he'll be fine, so really you should just be praying that he'll be able to survive his crazy mother.

The Morsel

Caulder was a beautiful baby. Seriously, just beautiful. But he spit up ALL THE TIME, and he was on this nasty Nutramigen formula that smelled like death when he barfed it up, so that was (barely) enough to deter me from eating him.

Tukker was so stinking cute, but he was all ribs and gristle and oxygen tubes, so he wasn't really worth the trouble of snacking on. You need a little fat for tenderness, amiright?

But this baby? Less barfy than Caulder. A lot meatier than Tukker.

This baby is just right.

Nom nom. Mmmmm nom.

Halloween 2015

I. Love. Halloween.

Some day, when I accrue enough terrifying decorations, I'm going to be crazy Halloween lady. And it will be glorious.

This year, we taught little man about zombie love. It's a beautiful thing.

We carved pumpkins. Caulder did his all on his own, and neither of them was interested in following a pattern. Apparently their imaginations can produce much more terrifying jack-o-lanterns than any store-bought pattern.

The final results: a vampire and some sort of scary dude with a hatchet, or something? I don't know, but Caulder was really excited about it.

Cole had the day off again - two years in a row! Caulder went as a cat burglar and even made his own cat burgling mask. Tukker agonized over what he should dress up as. Seriously. Hardest decision OF HIS LIFE.

He finally settled on two: skeleton cop.

I went as Bellatrix, Cole was a Death Eater, and Rander was Dobby the house elf. Because we're Harry Potter nerds. Hardcore.

But look at this. Holy crap.

I wanted to squish him all night.

Seriously. So requiring of squishing.

I was made to be a dark witch. The pasty face. The black under-eye circles. The haggard, terrifying appearance. I'm a natural.

We also had our annual Muniz family Halloween party.

My sis and bro-in-law came as Jack and Coke. Bryton was a spice rack. I laughed so hard.

The in-laws. Farrel makes one sexy Hawaiian.

And Kristin had awesome games planned. The pantyhose tennis ball game was the hit of the night.

Everyone looks good with pantyhose on their head.

Now we just have to wait a whole year for Halloween to come back. Boo!

The Most Terrifying Thing in the World

This. Tukker made it at school.

It's just. so. terrifying.

It will haunt my nightmares forever. And now yours, too. You're welcome.

Where Did October Go?

I must be getting old because life keeps going faster and faster, and I can't keep up. We've had so many fun things happening, so here's a quick catchup on a few of them.

My awesome nephew Braiden got married in October at the Payson temple. It is so beautiful.

Look at these two. They are gorgeous.

We had dress like a pirate day at school.

We got the big boys' school pictures back.

We taught Rander about family selfies. He loved it.

We met with a new endocrinologist to get a second opinion about Tukk's slow growth. He's still following the regular growth curve but not catching up, and kids are starting to tease him about how small he is. They tell him he can't really be 7 because he's too small, and they try to pick him up at recess and carry him around. This makes him furious ("I'm not a baby, mom. Why do they keep trying to pick me up?"). It makes me gnash my teeth a little bit, and because it's starting to bother him we decided to try a new doc and just see what he thinks.

This, of course, meant a new round of growth junk: a lengthy appointment to discuss Tukk's extensive medical history, followed by a hand X-ray to check his bone age and growth plates, and a massive blood draw. I think they took 6 vials of blood from him this time and he didn't even flinch. The dude is tough. Plus he thought it was awesome to see his skeleton in the hand X-ray.

All of this poking and prodding, of course, meant he deserved a reward. A giant reward.

We got the results back a couple of weeks ago and this new doc pretty much said the same thing as his old one: Tukk's body is producing adequate amounts of growth hormone and testosterone, thyroid function is great, no celiac disease... things are running fine from a hormone perspective, Tukk is just tiny and, in the doc's words, "grossly underweight." I honestly felt like responding "No duh" when he was talking about Tukk's weight. But at least I didn't want to throat punch him like I did when the dietician diagnosed Tukker as "malnourished." I had a flipping come apart over that one, and someone nearly got cut. I'm making progress, people.

I don't think there's anything wrong with what Tukk's body is producing - I think his metabolism is still just supercharged, so his body doesn't get enough nutrition to catch up growth-wise because his metabolism burns too much off before his body can really use it. We were told by one of Tukk's many docs that babies who are critically ill for extended periods of time have "damaged" metabolisms. I guess their bodies just start burning everything furiously so they can send nutrition out to all the sicky parts to try to heal them, and when their body is in this mode for too long it doesn't always know how to switch back.

So basically Tukker has a metabolism that any 30-something mother would kill for. I wish we could swap. Oh, how I wish we could swap.

So now the next option is to do a 5-hour sleep study on the Tukk. Your body produces growth hormone all the time, but it's supposed to kick out a big burst of it while you're asleep, so even though Tukk has adequate levels when he's tested while awake, he may not be getting that big burst while he sleeps. If not he may qualify for GH shots. Which may help him grow. Or may not. That's a lot of "mays." And it won't have any effect on his weight.

His old doc wanted to do this test 2 years ago but it was right after another round of blood draws for growth hormone and X-rays for growth plates and an X-ray to check his hip and a separate blood draw to check his kidney function, so Tukk was done. He started crying when I told him he had to do the kidney blood draw and asked, "Why do I always have to do this?" It broke my heart, so I told his old endocrinologist we weren't doing the sleep study. Tukk needed a break.

I'm not sure if we'll do it now. The new doc said we'd wait til March to even consider it, so we have some time to think it over. All the "mays" make me leery, and we've been doing this crap since Tukk came home from the hospital, and he's never ever qualified for GH, so I'm starting to feel like it's pointless. I wouldn't even have taken him in for a second opinion if he hadn't started noticing how small he is. So I think we'll leave it up to him - if he wants to give it a try, we'll do it. If not, we'll just keep reminding him that dynamite comes in small packages. And I'll go kick the crap out of anyone who teases him, so all the kids will know he has a crazy mom and will leave him alone. And I'll get to spend some time in prison for beating up a first grader, but they cook for you and (I'm pretty sure) wash your orange jumpsuit for you, so it's basically a win-win.

But enough about medical junk. Let's talk about the things that really matter in life, like a man's first visit to Krispy Kreme:

It's an epic event.

And also a man's first wrestling singlet. Look at those muscles. He's a lean, mean, wrestling machine.

And I just love this picture my niece McKenzie sent me. That is all.

The Zoo

My work had an employee appreciation day and took all of us to the zoo.

These two bonded. The ape was totally jealous of Tukk's sweet shades.

And the baby orangutan? So stinking cute.

The boys thought the animals were cool, but not nearly as cool as the animatronic dinosaurs on display.

I'm not really sure what was happening, but it looks like Caulder is pooping. In an eagle's nest. That's probably illegal.

St. Geezy Girls' Trip

We finally resurrected the St. George girls' trip! We used to go every summer, but it's been years since we've been down to see ...
